Day 2 (San Francisco): We kept passing this place called Mama's in North Beach's Washington Square and noticed the line that wraps around the corner outside of the restaurant never seemed to dissipate! Since we had to be up early for our trip to Alcatraz, we figured hitting the place at 8am would cut down out waiting time. Turns out people are pretty serious about this place and had already started lining up...but much less of a wait than later in the day, maybe around 20 mins for a table this early on a Sunday morning so not too bad. I was surprised at how tiny it was once we got inside...it looks like a cozy country house with about 15 tables inside (that explains the wait!).
They run Mama's like a well oiled machine; you watch the cooks creating French Toast and Omelet masterpieces and salivate over the fresh crab, smoked salmon, berries, and baked goods that tempt you as you wait in line to order. We had each decided what to order while waiting outside but when you're face to face with live versions of each incredible menu item, it's impossible not to change your order...several times! I could not believe that after seeing all of that amazingness, we all ended up ordering some form of a benedict! It was a hard decision for me because they are known for many great things...one of them being the Banana Bread French Toast which they make with their house made banana bread (!!) but I was in a savory mood so Shrimp and Avocado Benedict it was!
I loved Mama's seafood take on eggs benedict...toasted english muffin, sliced avocado, tomato, shrimp, poached egg, and creamy hollandaise sauce with a sprinkle of parsley...and thank goodness they were generous with the shrimp...all I wished for was a view of the water and I would be set!
Ashley's Bacon Benedict
Jason's Smoked Salmon Benedict (highly recommended!)
Ashley and I also had two steeping mugs of Hot Chocolate with whipped cream that hit the spot on a chilly San Francisco morning! Can't wait to go back and try some of their sweeter offerings!
I knew that I had to try a bowl of Fisherman's Wharf clam chowder...I had no idea there were going to be multiple chowder places to choose from once we got there! This made the decision very difficult...but we decided on Pier Market because they had a nice offering of fresh caught fish, crab, shrimp, oysters, lobster and more in the market portion of the restaurant out front so it looked like they would have a nice fresh variety of seafood and chowder in the restaurant as well (not to mention the San Francisco Chronicle had named their chowder the "Best on Fisherman's Wharf"...so says their sign out front).
Ok, I'm going to be completely honest...I actually prefer Campbell's canned clam chowder over Pier Market's (there just isn't anything special about it, I didn't get any clam chunks in my bowl, it's pretty bland and WAY too creamy...aka avoid at all costs!!!) so I would pass on coming here for clam chowder again...however, their oysters and crab were delish!
We then headed over to the Fudge House (I can't resist good fudge!) So...many...choices! Not only were there 20 different varieties of fudge but also Candied Apples, Pralines, Caramel Corn, Raspberry Bark and the list goes on...how was I to pick, oi! I picked up a chunk of the Chocolate Chocolate Chip Fudge to-go but couldn't resist taking a bite in the shop. It was the best of all worlds...creamy chocolate fudge with dark, white, and milk chocolate chunks(!)...and the chocolate chunks are the soft bakers chocolate so it easily melts in your mouth with the regular fudge part...so good!
So many things to do and eat in this great city...and 1 more day to tell you about!
